In January 1942, only months after commissioning, Deloraine came under torpedo attack from I-124. The torpedo missed, and she located the submarine with ASDIC before attacking with depth charges. Two other Bathurst corvettes helped continue the search and attacks while Deloraine replenished her depth charges. USS Edsall, which was escorting the tanker USS Trinity, also joined the action. The four escorts shared credit for destroying I-124, the first enemy submarine sunk in Australian waters.
