Sightings and delays gave Britain time to react

The raiders' route, civilian sightings, missing torpedo-boat escorts, ice, and accumulated delays eroded surprise and consumed fuel.

Notes

British mining pressure discouraged use of the Kiel Canal, while the route through Danish waters and along Norway exposed the ships to civilian observers. Escort delays and ice added further friction. Each delay reduced the endurance of the raiders and their support ships while giving Britain more time to identify threatened convoys and deploy heavy cover. Operational surprise was therefore eroded by geography, weather, escort readiness, and the cumulative cost of time.
