Chapter ยท 0:14-4:41

When defeat becomes an epic naval blunder

The opening distinguishes a genuinely careless grand-scale mistake from a defeat produced by an opponent's skill and initiative.

Notes

The opening sets a demanding test for the label "epic blunder": the decision must be grand in scale as well as stupid or careless. Defeat alone does not meet that test because an opponent may have created the result through speed, skill, and initiative. The Dutch raid on the Medway illustrates the distinction: English economy measures created vulnerability, but Dutch mobilization and strategic surprise still deserve agency. That distinction supplies the test used throughout the lecture.
