Between wars Rodney became a baronet, served at Greenwich Hospital, and commanded the Jamaica Station, but an expensive Northampton election and an unpaid ceremonial appointment left him deeply in debt. After losing the Jamaica command and missing out on its governorship, he settled in Paris while burdened by election debts. His promotion to Admiral of the White placed him at the highest active flag grade below Admiral of the Fleet and gave him seniority over other naval officers. Marshal Biron then helped settle the immediate debt so Rodney and his family could return to Britain. The claim that France offered Rodney a command is dismissed here as an unfounded rumour.
