Debate, cronyism, and the strength of the state

Unity of purpose can coexist with disagreement. Open debate can improve decisions, while cronyism and personal loyalty can weaken the state.

Notes

A shared national purpose does not require agreement on every issue. An effective commander listens to competing staff views before forming a decision, and political debate can test ideas in much the same way. One-party systems are vulnerable to promoting people who are loyal to a ruler rather than to the state. In a large, geographically dispersed country, personal rule and cronyism can deepen corruption and make control harder. People who feel invested in a political system are also more likely to defend it and work for its success.
