Michiel de Ruyter directed the Dutch fleet, with Cornelis Tromp representing the Amsterdam admiralty and Adriaen Banckert the Zeeland admiralty. Tromp's duel with Spragge consumed attention and ships, while Banckert played a critical part in the action. The ship-name comparison counts nine vessels named for de Ruyter and eight for Tromp, against only three for Banckert. That imbalance is presented as evidence that Banckert's repeated contribution to de Ruyter's battles has been undervalued. Even after he became a lieutenant admiral, a junior officer from an admiralty contributing more ships could receive command of the combined fleet. Institutional weight and later commemoration can therefore obscure operational merit.
