De Grasse and Bougainville brought different kinds of experience

One commander brought a long combat record, while the other joined naval skill to Pacific exploration and colonial experience.

Notes

De Grasse's service stretched from the War of the Austrian Succession through the Seven Years' War and the major Caribbean actions of the American era. The Saintes would be his final battle after victories and operations that included Grenada, Martinique, the Chesapeake, Yorktown, and Saint Kitts. Bougainville had a different profile as a capable naval officer and explorer. His Pacific voyages made him a contemporary of James Cook, and he apparently established an early recorded settlement in the Falkland Islands. Placing these careers side by side reinforces that the French high command possessed substantial experience even though its organization remained awkward.
