Prototype roles preceded DB-3 service in China

Floatplane and air-cruiser experiments show the DB-3's proposed breadth before aircraft and Soviet personnel deployed to China.

Notes

The DB-3 family generated several proposed roles beyond conventional bombing. A torpedo-bomber floatplane reached the single-prototype stage, while the cannon-armed air-cruiser concept was tested in 1938. These experiments show Soviet designers testing whether one long-range airframe could cover maritime strike and escort needs. The operational story then widened internationally when 24 DB-3s and Soviet personnel went to China to train and support Republic of China Air Force use.
