David Taylor, propeller trials, and US Navy design practice

British and American propeller research combined model experiments with ship trials, while differing over model appendages and the amount of research funding available.

Notes

Stanley Goodall's comparison of British and American propeller research finds similar propellers and hull forms despite differences in experimental practice. Washington derived wake and thrust-deduction values with appendages fitted to the model, while Haslar tested models without them. The Admiralty modified tank results using ship-trial data, including corrections to propeller pitch. American practice also combined model work with trials, and Taylor's paper drew particular strength from the care, variety, and quantity of those trials. Goodall praises the research made available to British designers and warns that British economies in research could prove penny-wise and pound-foolish.
