Restarting the reactors restores power to Dauntless's primary guns, but casualties have left nobody at the main fire-control station. The ship's AI can calculate firing solutions and fire the weapons. Within the story's rules, experienced human gunners achieve a higher hit probability than computer targeting alone, especially against an evading ship. The captain therefore takes the controls, drawing on the gunnery instruction he received at the academy. His first shot misses, but the guns remain available for another attempt. The immediate limitation is the shortage of trained people at the controls.

Dauntless's captain takes the guns after fire-control casualties
Restored machinery leaves a personnel problem: the captain must aim the primary guns while the working AI supplies firing solutions.
