Edward I's daughters and the 1290 succession document

Warner presents a 1290 oath showing that Edward I planned for his daughters to inherit England and Ireland if his male line failed.

Notes

A 1290 oath sealed at Amesbury Priory set out how Joan of Acre's future husband, Gilbert de Clare, was to recognize Edward I's heirs. Gilbert would first swear allegiance to Edward of Caernarfon, then to any other sons or male-line heirs. If those lines failed, the succession would pass to Edward's eldest daughter Eleanor, followed by Joan, Margaret, and the remaining daughters and their heirs. This bypassed Edward's brother Edmund and Edmund's sons, making the document unusually revealing evidence for medieval ideas about monarchy and female inheritance.
