Why an Allied landing against Austria-Hungary would be costly

The Allies had the means to attempt a Dardanelles-style landing, but Austria-Hungary’s fortifications and fleet made the likely cost disproportionate to the gain.

Question

Could the Allies have mounted a Dardanelles-style landing against Austria-Hungary in the First World War?

Short answer

They could have tried, but the defensive geography, fortifications, and fleet would make it an exceptionally expensive operation with little strategic payoff.

Notes

The Allies had the technology to attempt a landing against Austria-Hungary. The defender, however, had coastal forts, coastal vessels, and Tegetthoff-class battleships. The proposed landing area also offered exceptionally favorable terrain for an organized defence once troops reached shore. An operation that was technically possible could still consume so many ships and troops that its strategic return would not justify the losses.
