The Danube as frontier, highway, and logistics system

The Danube's role as an industrial and logistical corridor explains why its flotillas emphasized support, engineering, mine clearance, and mobile artillery.

Notes

Danube forces included organizations administered specifically for the river, even when they were not formally called flotillas. Their composition followed the geography and the conflicts each state expected to fight. Wide river valleys offered comparatively level routes along which armies could move while boats carried supplies beside them. This made the Danube a route for sustaining campaigns as well as moving trade. Engineering, logistics, minesweeping and mobile artillery therefore occupied much of its river forces' work.
