The Danube shaped capitals, trade, and defence

Bucharest gains defensive depth from the river, while Vienna and Budapest grew as political and economic hubs where Danube trade concentrated.

Notes

The Danube does not have to run directly through a capital to shape its security. Bucharest lies behind the Romanian-Bulgarian river border and close to important crossing points, giving the waterway a defensive role. Farther upstream, capitals such as Vienna and Budapest developed where river crossings and internal and external trade converged. Goods and wealth moving along the Danube helped those cities become durable political centres. The Nile offers a comparison: for much of its history, Egypt is described as settled land on either bank of the river surrounded by desert. Later development has altered that pattern to an extent, while leaving the river central to the country.
