Dante Alighieri placed twelve 12-inch guns in four centerline triple turrets. The design applied Vittorio Cuniberti's earlier ideas about heavily armed, high-speed capital ships. Twenty-three water-tube boilers supplied four turbines developing about 32,000 shaft horsepower. The resulting 22-knot speed exceeded the contemporary British battle line by roughly one knot and made her a fast battleship for 1909. Italy therefore combined concentrated firepower and speed in a single hull rather than creating a separate battlecruiser type.
