Why damaged ships should not be committed before repair

A French campaign force enters battle already badly damaged, turning repair decisions and fuel state into a lesson about operational readiness.

Notes

In one campaign engagement, the opposing ships begin damaged, short of fuel, and unable to reach their intended speed. An available port could have restored them before they faced a much stronger battle fleet. Their decision to accept combat instead produces a lopsided defeat. The result shows why nominal hull count can differ sharply from deployable combat power once maintenance, fuel, and preservation decisions are considered.
