Reconstructing Dalrymple-Hamilton's early career

Conflicting birthplace claims, difficult service records, and scattered contemporary accounts complicate the reconstruction of Dalrymple-Hamilton's route into destroyer command.

Notes

Dalrymple-Hamilton came from a highly connected service family but left no autobiography. His naval records place his birth in London in 1890, while other sources claim Scotland, where he spent much of his childhood. The Dreadnought Project helps trace his overall service, Uboat.net supplies detailed wartime chronology, and contemporary accounts add material about his commands. Difficult handwriting limits what can confidently be recovered from the original records. His leadership can also be assessed through the challenges he received and the results he achieved. He entered the Royal Navy in 1905, sought appointments in smaller ships after his initial training, and received his first command in 1917, aged about twenty-seven.
