As Flag Officer Commanding Scotland and Northern Ireland, Dalrymple-Hamilton helped defend and maintain the Clyde base before its expansion for nuclear-submarine operations. He reached full admiral in January 1948. From 1948 he also served with the British Joint Services Mission in Washington, where his experience at D-Day and against Bismarck gave him substantial naval credentials. He retired in October 1950.
