Dabul's ambush triggered exemplary destruction

A fatal reconnaissance at Dabul brought an amphibious pincer attack and violence meant to warn the rest of the coast.

Notes

A Portuguese captain went ashore to investigate Dabul and was killed with members of his party. The claim that six thousand troops ambushed so small a group appears doubtful, and the figure may describe the whole garrison. Almeida answered with an amphibious pincer attack that crushed the defenders. Portuguese forces then burned the town and used cannon against riverside settlements, inhabitants, livestock, and even stray animals, establishing a brutal warning for ports farther north.
