Chapter · 1:34:40-1:43:00

D-Day succeeded by assembling an entire system to breach the coast

Overlord paired specialized engineering armor, mine clearance, battleships, cruisers, escorts, transports, and artificial harbors on a scale meant to overwhelm the Atlantic Wall.

Notes

The contrast with Dieppe is the depth of preparation rather than an absence of German defenses. Hobart's Funnies addressed mines, obstacles, and engineering tasks; minesweepers cleared broad approach lanes; and a large bombardment force included battleships, monitors, cruisers, destroyers, and fighter-direction ships. The battleships included USS Arkansas, USS Nevada, HMS Ramillies, HMS Rodney, USS Texas, and HMS Warspite, with HMS Nelson held in reserve and HMS Erebus and HMS Roberts among the monitors. Mulberry harbors and vast transport capacity then sustained the lodgment after the first landing. Fortifications forced the Allies to spend years, industrial capacity, and enormous combat power to make the invasion acceptably likely to succeed.
