Could the Allies have bypassed Omaha Beach and captured it later from the rear?
Short answerNo. Omaha was needed to keep the lodgement connected, secure inland objectives, and prevent isolated beachheads from becoming vulnerable.
NotesWeather, communications failures, and the loss of DD Sherman support made Omaha far worse than planned. LVTs might have provided extra firepower and coped somewhat better with rough water, although they were not immune to it. Leaving Omaha untouched would fragment the invasion and slow the drive toward Carentan and other inland road hubs before German forces concentrated. A continuous front was a logistical and operational necessity. The comparison with San Carlos Bay shows the danger between landing waves, before enough troops arrive to create defence in depth; D-Day magnified that vulnerable interval.
