Danae carried twelve 21-inch torpedoes in four triple launchers, compared with eight weapons in four twin launchers on the late C class. The protection scheme drew directly on experience at Jutland: machinery remained behind side armour while the forward and after magazine areas received stronger coverage and an internal armour box. That arrangement made hits short of a direct penetration less likely to reach the ammunition spaces and cause a catastrophic explosion. The larger torpedo battery also gave a light cruiser stationed far from reinforcements a serious way to threaten a heavier opponent. Combined with the extra cruising range, these changes refined the D class for presence and policing duties beyond the European sphere.
