Chapter · 3:15:13-3:23:46

The D-class cruisers and their cancelled sisters

The D class illustrates a familiar procurement contraction from twelve planned ships to eight completed, followed by varied service across British, New Zealand, and Polish fleets.

Notes

Brassey's plan shows a handsome cruiser class originally intended to reach twelve ships before the final four were cancelled in November 1918. The cancelled names included Dauntless, Daring, Desperate, and Dryad, while the completed ships went on to unusually varied careers. Diomede and Dunedin served with New Zealand, Dunedin was sunk by U-124, and Dragon entered Polish service before becoming a Normandy breakwater after damage from a German human torpedo. The discussion makes the class useful both as an example of postwar order reductions and as a bridge across several Commonwealth and Allied navies.
