Captain Thomas Troubridge is Nelson's next most senior officer, but HMS Culloden grounds on a shoal in the dark and sits out the fight. Thomas Hardy, commanding HMS Mutine, spends much of the action trying to pull the stranded ship free. The grounding therefore also occupies the smaller vessel that could otherwise assist the fleet. Hardy later takes over from the injured Edward Berry as Nelson's flag captain.
