Chapter ยท 14:08-15:24

The cruising role predates the cruiser

Cruisers were a short-lived label for a much older set of naval duties performed by many kinds of ships.

Notes

The talk separates a cruiser as a named type, broadly associated with the late nineteenth through mid-twentieth centuries, from the cruising role. Roman galleys, Chinese ships, frigates, and later purpose-built cruisers all performed pieces of it. Patrol, war, peacekeeping, and maritime presence existed long before ships carried the label. Modern frigates and destroyers can therefore perform cruiser work without inheriting the historical name.
