Oil tankers as a foundation of modern naval logistics

A tanker-history book traces the ship type from early crude carriers to wartime conversions and modern scale.

Notes

Oil carriage developed from the 1861 sailing brig Elizabeth Watts through the first purpose-built British tankers and rapidly growing early twentieth-century ships. Plans and cross-sections show how tanks, framing, and machinery changed merchant design as petroleum transport grew in scale. Tanker conversions into escort carriers and other wartime support ships also link merchant construction directly to naval capability. A later family example adds the surveyor's role: naval architect Douglas Clark assessed tankers for Lloyd's, and an adverse finding could make insurance difficult to obtain. Ship design, classification, and marine insurance shaped the practical operation of merchant fleets.
