Cross-domain training for senior officers

Practical experience with unfamiliar branches and technologies can broaden senior officers' judgment, but extra training takes time and can require additional staffing or cuts elsewhere.

Notes

Senior officers benefit from experiencing branches and technologies outside their original specialty while attending war college or preparing for flag rank. For Nagumo's generation, that might have meant flying and time aboard submarines; today it could include drones and electronic warfare. Practical exposure should build an understanding of both unfamiliar systems and the crews who operate them. Broader education can lengthen training and require extra personnel to cover gaps, or displace other experience, including time in command.
