Use general histories for the first cross-check

Start by checking a memoir's dates, places, forces, and broad account against accessible general histories.

Notes

A general history provides a practical first comparison for a battle or campaign described in a memoir. It can quickly test the broad chronology, location, forces, and outcome against the autobiographer's account. Agreement gives the researcher an initial basis for trust rather than a final verdict, because a popular history is only the first layer of corroboration. Opening and comparing multiple works on the same subject marks the point where casual reading becomes research.
