The international squadron intervenes in Crete

Bausan's multinational duty off Crete places the cruiser within a wider European pattern of naval intervention against Ottoman authority.

Notes

The international squadron combined Austro-Hungarian, French, German, Italian, Russian, and British naval power during the 1897-1898 uprising in Crete. Bausan's participation placed an Italian protected cruiser inside a coalition assembled to impose the great powers' preferred outcome. The intervention belonged to a longer history of using fleets to shape Ottoman affairs, including the Battle of Navarino in 1827. The coalition applied collective diplomatic pressure without producing a conventional fleet battle.
