Engineers and local reserves could reinforce Maleme

The alternative defence gives engineers field-work tasks, reinforces 22nd Battalion with three C Companies, places Greek troops around the riverbed, and creates a reserve at Maleme.

Notes

Engineers could have obstructed the dry riverbed and prepared other denial works instead of serving as poorly trained riflemen. The proposed reinforcement took C Company from the Māori Battalion and C Companies from 21st and 23rd battalions, concentrating them around Maleme and creating a brigade reserve. Moving brigade headquarters closer would improve control of the critical sector. Greek supporting troops positioned in or around the riverbed could bring immediate fire on the landing zone. Reserve placement and field engineering would make the limited garrison harder to dislodge.
