Why Crete's carrier-covering operation is easily forgotten

Campaign narratives tend to foreground the land battle and evacuation from Crete, leaving Formidable's damaged covering force outside the story's most familiar categories.

Notes

Campaign maps and popular accounts often omit the aircraft carrier badly damaged while supporting Crete. Land combat, airborne operations, evacuation, and dramatic ship losses fit the familiar campaign narrative more readily than a fleet covering those movements at a distance. Histories of amphibious warfare can make the same choice when they foreground troops and shore bombardment while overlooking landing-craft crews making repeated runs under fire. Pacific-war narratives routinely place carrier actions such as the Battle of the Coral Sea at the centre of the story, which makes the Mediterranean silence more striking. Supporting operations can be essential to an outcome while remaining difficult to fit into a history organized around the most visible fighting.
