Why valuable Crete could not feed the invading army

Crete was rich as a commercial hub and producer of high-value goods, but it could not provision the large Ottoman army locally.

Notes

The Ottoman invasion had gained a foothold, but that did not solve its supply problem. Crete was valuable as a commercial hub, yet it could not feed tens of thousands of troops. Its agriculture and trade could generate wealth without producing the volume of staples needed by the invading army. Holding the sea routes therefore remained essential to sustaining the Ottoman campaign after ports and ground had been captured.
