Crete sustains the Greek government and armed forces

A prepared Crete could keep part of the Greek state on national territory and organize continued resistance after the mainland fell.

Notes

The island's political value would rise sharply once the Axis occupied mainland Greece. A fortified Crete could host the Greek government, senior officers, and a recognizable command structure rather than serving only as a British-held base. It would become a rallying point for Free Greek forces and give the Allies a legitimate national partner in the eastern Mediterranean. That continuity would also improve the coordination problems that weakened the historical defense.
