Question

Were the design concepts behind German battlecruisers similar to those behind the Cressy class?

Short answer

No. The Cressys were not designed to back up battleships.

Notes

The Cressy class was not intended to support battleships in the battle line. That separates it from the German battlecruiser role described earlier.
