Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico was formed in 1930 from major industrial organizations and centered on a large Trieste yard. The company later became part of Fincantieri. Its output included cruisers, liners, cargo ships, and the battleships Vittorio Veneto and Roma. This range of work made the yard important to Italy's naval and merchant-ship buildup before the Second World War. Italy could build demanding hulls in experienced yards even though its propulsion industry faced the metallurgical limits described earlier.
