Chapter ยท 45:42-51:26

Cradock's inadequate cruiser squadron

Cradock knew Good Hope, Monmouth, Glasgow, and the slow armed merchant cruiser Otranto were not a balanced answer to Von Spee.

Notes

Good Hope supplied only two 9.2-inch guns, while Monmouth carried six-inch weapons that depended on reaching a much shorter fighting range. The armed merchant cruiser Otranto added eight 4.7-inch guns but imposed a severe speed and protection liability on the whole formation. Glasgow was a capable 25-knot Town-class cruiser, yet one ship could not neutralize all three German light cruisers by herself. The promised Minotaur-class armored cruiser Defence would have increased Cradock's 9.2-inch armament from two guns to six and added ten 7.5-inch weapons without slowing the fast ships. Canopus brought four 12-inch guns and might have deterred Von Spee, but her 18-knot design speed and recurring machinery failures made her a poor mobile substitute for Defence.
