Some observers predicted a Russian victory at Tsushima simply by adding up the guns carried by each fleet. That arithmetic ignored training, fire control, ammunition effects, ship condition, formation handling, and whether the guns could bear on a useful target. Trafalgar and many other battles show that the side with more guns does not automatically win. Force totals cannot replace operational analysis.

Why gun totals misread the coming battle at Tsushima
Prebattle predictions based on the Russian fleet's total number of guns confused inventory arithmetic with combat effectiveness.
