Chapter · 0:20-5:26

How to judge a navy without mythmaking

The opening sets a January 1939 no-hindsight exercise and explains why evidence, incomplete sources, and human fallibility should temper confident judgments about navies.

Notes

The exercise asks for the five most important weaknesses facing each major Axis navy and the changes available on 1 January 1939. No navy or state is perfect, and comforting national stories turn history into fantasy when they conceal failures or contradictions. Historians work with surviving sources, incomplete recollections, and fallible interpretation, so even confident judgments remain open to correction. Contemporary constraints provide a stronger test of institutions, industry, logistics, and decisions than later reputations.
