Could Villeneuve have won Trafalgar?

Test the limited reinforcement scenarios that might have changed whether Trafalgar happened at all.

Question

Was there any realistic way Villeneuve could have won?

Short answer

Five extra ships and better cohesion might have improved his chances, but Nelson could have avoided battle until Cornwallis reinforced him.

Notes

Villeneuve had little realistic prospect of victory with the fleet as it stood. A successful junction with the Rochefort squadron could have added five ships, giving him thirty-eight against Nelson's twenty-seven if Britain received no further reinforcement. Nelson might then have declined battle, shadowed the allied fleet, and sent a frigate ahead to Cornwallis. A British concentration near Brest could have joined the Channel Fleet to Nelson's force, so reinforcements might have prevented Trafalgar without securing an eventual allied victory.
