Could Japanese naval aircraft have damaged the dams around San Francisco?
Short answerThey could attempt it, but available weapons were poorly suited to destroying the dams; specialized underwater blast effects were needed.
NotesJapanese aircraft could theoretically reach dam targets, but possessing the range did not mean they had an effective weapon. Royal Navy attempts to use torpedoes against Italian dams did not always achieve decisive results. Ordinary torpedo bombers were therefore a poor answer to the structural problem. The comparison explains why Britain later pursued a specialized bouncing-bomb solution instead.
