Brueys had been offered the option of moving to Corfu, and a later order directing the move was intercepted. Corfu provided safer anchorages than Aboukir Bay. Its position in the Ionian Sea, however, made communication and material support for an army operating from Egypt difficult. The dilemma shows why base safety, distance, and the supported campaign had to be weighed together rather than solved by anchorage quality alone.

Corfu offered safety but not close support for Egypt
Moving to Corfu would have provided a safer anchorage, yet placed the French fleet on the opposite side of the Mediterranean from the army it was meant to support.
