A strategic translator between admirals and government

Corbett's value lay in understanding naval professionals while translating their concerns into language politicians could use, then carrying political constraints back to the Navy.

Notes

Corbett and Laughton acted as communication nodes between naval officers, historians, interested civilians, and political leaders. Admirals possessed professional expertise but often struggled to explain it to people outside a lifetime at sea. Corbett knew enough naval history and practice to understand their arguments, yet remained a civilian able to communicate with government. The exchange had to work in both directions because political concerns also needed accurate translation back to the Navy. This role made mutual respect essential and helps explain why a naval historian could influence policy without exercising command.
