Why a Japanese Coral Sea victory delays rather than decides the war

A Japanese victory at Coral Sea could expand the early perimeter, but Allied shipbuilding and American war production would still determine the long war.

Question

What happens if Japan wins the Battle of the Coral Sea?

Short answer

The war lasts longer and Japan may expand farther, but Allied industrial power still produces the same eventual outcome.

Notes

The panel expects a Japanese victory at Coral Sea to lengthen the Pacific War rather than change its final result. Japan might gain more territory and confidence, but the United States would still complete the Essex-class carrier program and perhaps more Midway-class carriers and Montana-class battleships. Once American production reached full scale, Japan would face an increasingly severe numerical disadvantage. The only route to a different strategic outcome would require the Axis to disrupt American manufacturing or break American political will, neither of which a Coral Sea victory achieves.
