Denmark's strategic paradox after losing the fleet

Losing the fleet perversely made it easier for Denmark to satisfy France without remaining a major naval threat to Britain.

Notes

One deliberately cynical reading follows Denmark's position after the attack. Denmark could enter the Continental System and reduce the danger of French invasion, yet the captured fleet left it unable to enforce the system effectively at sea. Britain, having removed the naval threat, no longer had the same reason to invade Denmark. The bombardment still caused serious damage, while the loss of a strategic asset narrowed Denmark's exposure to two competing great powers.
