Chapter · 17:43-18:54

River crossing, mountain route, and sea supply

Conwy's position controls a river crossing and movement toward the mountains while its sea access makes the fortress difficult to isolate or leave unsecured in an army's rear.

Notes

Conwy controls a River Conwy crossing and the route toward the Welsh mountains. An advancing force could not safely leave the fortress untended behind it. Formidable terrain and architecture still make the position difficult to approach, even after railway and road bridges changed the surroundings. Sea access supports resupply and defense while tying the castle to the movement of goods in the local economy. Conwy therefore served as a protected logistical node as well as a barrier across a land route.
