A completed fortress still required political attention and maintenance. Conwy remained an important royal place after Edward I, but buildings such as the great hall needed structural support and waterproofing. Repairs under the Black Prince's administration made upkeep a continuing expense rather than a one-time construction cost. Once high-level attention moved elsewhere, the castle declined again. Its partial revival during later conflict shows how strategic value could return faster than neglected buildings could be restored.

Royal repairs followed by neglect
Conwy remained useful enough for royal visits and Black Prince-era repairs, yet attention faded and later crises only temporarily restored its importance.
