Conwy's plan turned its entrance into a tactical trap. Eight large towers and separate outer and inner wards forced an attacker through several defensive layers. The approach to the drawbridge remained exposed to fire, and the turn toward the gate presented the attacker's side to towers on both sides. Anyone who forced an entry could be caught in a crossfire. Reaching the outer ward only began another fight for the castle's important inner spaces.
