Chapter · 10:54-12:16

Sea supply breaks the 1294-95 siege

Madog ap Llywelyn's revolt trapped Edward I at Conwy, but continuing supply by water and the arrival of seaborne forces demonstrated the castle's maritime resilience.

Notes

Madog ap Llywelyn's revolt put Conwy's maritime design to an operational test. Edward I endured a siege there through December 1294 and January 1295. The castle continued receiving supplies by sea, preventing the landward encirclement from becoming complete isolation. Forces arriving by water in February brought relief and showed why an enemy needed naval control as well as an army. The story of Edward sharing his private wine with the garrison adds a leadership detail about morale and his personal concern over poisoning.
