Why escort comparisons can mislead

Canadian convoy escorts should be compared with the Royal Navy ships doing the same work, not with fast fleet destroyers assigned to higher-threat operations.

Notes

The apparent quality gap between Canadian and British escorts partly comes from comparing unlike missions. Britain possessed high-performance fleet destroyers, but most of those ships operated with major fleets rather than on routine convoy duty. Both navies entered the war short of purpose-built convoy escorts because interwar governments had neglected that category. When Canada later acquired Tribal-class destroyers, their capabilities brought correspondingly dangerous assignments rather than ordinary escort work.
