Newly completed ships often joined Halifax-Liverpool traffic almost immediately, with little time for a conventional naval workup. Merchant crews received the basic operating theory and then learned alongside the embarked Fleet Air Arm detachment while already serving on convoy routes. Naval personnel had to explain aircraft requirements to a merchant captain who might have no aviation experience. Deck-landing specialists also translated the ship's motion and intended manoeuvres for incoming pilots, making cross-service communication a safety-critical part of the design.
